Real-ity Check: The I-So-Late Trap and What’s Truly Real

Because Real-ity Is What You Make It—A Call to Adventure for Men

Mid-life can feel like standing on the edge of a foggy cliff, staring down at the life you’ve built and thinking, “Did I get it all wrong? Is it too late to climb higher?” For many men, this is the moment the I-So-Late Trap creeps in—a shadow whispering, “You’ve missed your chance.” It feeds on your past victories and regrets, twisting them into proof that life’s train has left without you. Remember: even the word “reality” is just “real-ity”—what your mind labels as real, not necessarily the truth of your life right now.

Yet, as George Eliot once said, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” The trap wants you to believe you’re behind, but the truth is far simpler: you’re exactly where you’re meant to be, even if it doesn’t feel that way.

Understanding the I-So-Late Trap

The I-So-Late Trap hits hardest when life refuses to follow the neat timeline we imagined. Society teaches men to measure themselves by:

  • Career titles and financial milestones

  • Physical strength and appearance

  • Status and recognition

  • Roles as provider, protector, or leader

When these markers shift—or fall short—the mind whispers, “You’re late. You’ve failed. You’re behind.”

But consider Muhammad Ali’s words: “Don’t count the days; make the days count.” The trap isn’t reality—it’s a story your mind tells about reality. Life doesn’t measure success by years lived or trophies collected—it’s in the moments lived fully, the choices made now, the risks taken despite fear.

Breaking Free: Seeing the Trap for What It Is

Escaping the I-So-Late Trap is like stepping out of a dense forest into sunlight. You realise the shadows that frightened you were never real—they were just old patterns, old beliefs, old fears.

Here’s how to break free:

  1. Release the Chains of Time

Time is not your enemy. It’s the river that carries you forward. You can’t control its current, but you can learn to ride it with skill. As Bruce Lee once said, “Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo survives by bending with the wind.” Let go of rigid timetables and allow life’s flow to guide you.

  2. Redefine Success

Forget society’s scoreboard. Success can be a quiet morning, a genuine connection, a creative spark, or a daring leap into the unknown. Realign your life with what stirs your soul, not what fills someone else’s expectations.

  3. Shed Old Identities

Father, husband, worker, competitor—these roles evolve. They are clothes you’ve outgrown. Beneath them is your core self, resilient and timeless. Rediscover it, and you’ll find freedom in your own skin.

  4. Reignite Your Passions

What excites you? What makes your chest thrum with anticipation? It’s never too late to take it up, pursue it, or explore it. Samuel Beckett famously said, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” Mid-life is your chance to fail better, and live fuller.

  5. Live in the Now

The trap thrives on regret and worry—glancing backward at what’s gone, forward at what hasn’t come. Instead, focus on the present moment. This is where all possibility exists—and where clarity begins. From Trap to Freedom

Breaking free from the I-So-Late Trap is like waking up from a half-forgotten dream. The fog lifts, the cliff becomes a path, and life’s possibilities stretch before you. The “late” you thought you were is just a ghost of expectation, a mirage.

You are not behind. You are here. You are alive, breathing, capable of more than you’ve yet imagined. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Mid-life is not an ending—it’s a blank canvas for the man you’re becoming, not the man you were told you should be.
